The first Karel Luyben Lecture dedicated to the rector magnificus emeritus Karel Luyben of Delft University of Technology takes place at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Berlin

As outlined in the recently published Special Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the reduction of global CO2 emissions is one of society’s most important and urgent challenges. In all future energy scenarios aimed at reducing CO2 emissions, solar energy plays a major role. However, to cope with the intermittent nature of sunlight, large-scale storage solutions are required. An attractive pathway is to directly convert abundant resources, such as water and CO2, into chemical fuels with sunlight. The advantages and challenges of this approach will be discussed and illustrated with examples of recent scientific breakthroughs in this exciting and growing field.
